What are Toner Cartridges?

A toner cartridge is required to print through a laser printer. It is made of fine plastic particles and coloring agents that are electrostatically positively charged. This powder is present in a removable casing called a toner hopper. When the printing task begins, the printer gets the toner from the toner hopper with the help of developer's unit. The toner powder is further transferred to a drum assembly through the developer's unit. The drum unit already has an electrostatic image of the object to be printed. The drum ejects the toner on the paper. The toner melts on the paper which is then rolled against the heated rolls. A toner cartridge can produce 2500 pages on the average.

These cartridges also called Xerox toner cartridges are at times expensive and cost more than the printer itself. However this fact is only true for the cheap laser printers. And when people run out of the toner, they simply dispose of the entire machine and get a new one. People some times buy cheap toners that are just one third full. Customers should turn to genuine and branded laser toners that are manufactured by reputed companies.

There are three major classifications of toner cartridges available in the market. They are - Original Equipment manufacturer Or OEM, Compatible toner cartridges and Re- manufactured cartridges. OEM cartridges are the most common type that we find in general office supply stores. These are manufactured by the printer manufacturers only. They offer certain guarantee on purchase. These cartridges are much expensive than compatible and re-manufactured cartridges.

Compatible toner cartridges are also known as alternative brand or generic cartridges. These cartridges are manufactured from scratch and not refilled, re-manufactured or used cartridges. In fact their production is undertaken by third parties who sell them to the consumers under different brand names. Although compatible cartridges slightly vary in design, look and the page yield due to certain patents, but it is the most cost effective alternative solution. Whereas re-manufactured toner cartridges are OEM cartridges which has been earlier used, but is thoroughly cleaned, refilled and quality checked. Compatible cartridges are the best option, but there are lots of misconceptions attached to its usage. They are often addressed as cheap cartridges, but a cheap toner cartridge doesn't imply that the quality is compromised. It is simply manufactured by third parties who adhere to the quality and the exact toner required for a printer. Many printer companies declare that warranty on the printer shall be voided if compatible cartridges are used instead of OEM cartridges. Well, many countries have made this illegal and the government has passed a legislation to ensure that it is illegal for a manufacturer to force a consumer buy certain parts.

But the size and shape of the toner varies from printer to printer. So before you buy one, tell the store about your printer's model number. Buying the accurate toner cartridge is very important; otherwise it will neither fit nor function. You can get them from stores of printer supplies both online and offline. Always keep the toner cartridge away from sunlight. If you are not going to replace the cartridge immediately, then do not store it near a window or a glass door.
